LECTURE 3

PRODUCT-BASIS OF FORMS OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

From Wikipedia

PRODUCT may MEAN :

A : Business
In marketing, a product is anything that can be offered to a market that might satisfy a want or need
-ex: merchandise(in retailing) finished goods(manufacturing).

B : Chemical reactions

A product is a substance that forms as a result of a biological- or chemical reaction. The result of these rearrangements is the formation of new, different substances (products)

C : Mathematics

In mathematics, a product is the result of multiplying, or an expression that identifies factors to be multiplied. The product usually depends on the order of the factors; in other words, matrix multiplication, and the multiplications in those other algebras, are non-commutative.

Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product

A product may have the following elements :

a) Form & space
b) Nodes & paths
c) Illusion

ATTRIBUTES OF FORM are

-heavy
-light
-colour
-proportion
-scale

-size
-shape
-pattern
-texture
-glow
-shine

-transparency
-translucency

NODES AND PATHS

Nodes can be categorized from the red box while paths is the line that link from one box to the other...It can be shown from our daily life. For example,,,nodes as a building while path as the road that link from one building to the other...In biological,,,paths conduct the impulses that had been generated for the reflection..These will form a space

Illusion
From Wikipedia,

An illusion is a distortion of the senses, revealing how the brain normally organizes and interprets sensory stimulation. While illusions distort reality, they are generally shared by most people.Illusions may occur with more of the human senses than vision, but visual illusions, optical illusions, are the most well known and understood. The emphasis on visual illusions occurs because vision often dominates the other senses. For example, individuals watching a ventriloquist will perceive the voice is coming from the dummy since they are able to see the dummy mouth the words. Some illusions are based on general assumptions the brain makes during perception. These assumptions are made using organizational principles, like Gestalt, an individual's ability of depth perception and motion perception, and perceptual constancy. Other illusions occur because of biological sensory structures within the human body or conditions outside of the body within one’s physical environment.

Illusion in Hermann's grid

In this grid, we can see dark shadows flickering at the intersections of the white lines. This is a beautiful brightness illusion caused by lateral inhibition in the retina. The response of a visual neuron looking at the intersection is suppressed by the surrounding white regions than that of the other neurons. As a result, the region at the intersection appears darker than the other regions. It may be difficult to see the illusory dark shadow at the intersection in the center of your gaze. This is because in the center of your visual field the spatial area to which visual neurons respond (receptive field) is very small and the spatial area in which lateral inhibition occurs is too small to cause this illusion.

DOMES DAY PROGRESS

At first,we fell anxiety as our site which is in site 36

is quite near from the briefing site ...BUT.....

after the briefing we are surprised when the site

has changed.....We need to carry our 'large dome'

to the unexpected site !!!!!

Extremely FAR AWAY for the briefing site

Pity to them.....

I don't expected that there are still people ....

who had no group until the most CHALLENGING DAY!!!

ASSIGNMENT B
REAL WORLD CONSTRUCTION
PRODUCTION OF A 'GEODESIC DOME'
INTENTION
We are intent to build a 'dome'. We choose 1V model as our 'dome'. Our intention is clearly shown by our motto which is ‘ No Pain No Gain’. If we are not able or willing to face any obstacles such as limited time and others, we will never success to finish and gain our product which is a 'dome'. We intent to build the 'dome' that we can stay in it for about 12 months.

KNOWLEDGE :
To produce our product, we should have knowledge to build the dome. It is include the way we stand all the materials that had been used to build the dome and also the way to counter any problems that will face the dome such as the heavy wind and others.

ACTOR from LEFT....

ZUHAIRI JOHAR BIN SAEDIN ( PLANNING)
ZAINAB BT HAMZAH ( INTERIOR DESIGN)
NOOR ASHIDAH BT YUSOF (CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT)
FARAH HANIN BT MOHD NAIN (PLANNING)
NOR'ATIKAH BT ISMAIL (BUILDING TECHNOLOGY)

MOTTO : NO PAIN NO GAIN
SITE
RULES
In order to build the dome, we should follow the rules that had listed down by our respective lecturer, Encik Wan Burhanuddin bin Wan Abidin.
Team at least ONE from a different major.
Team Leaders, please submit the particulars of your team in theLifespan: Not more than 12 months.
Links: Not linked to other domes, i.e. independent, standalone.
Team Report:
Each team must submit a report illustrating all the above rules including the lifespan of the proposed dome and what the materials can be recycled into.
Report (210mmX210mm) must be bound with a front and back covers.
The front cover must carry the team name, the members and majors, motto, and a sketch of the proposed dome.
Submission: 10:00am, 10 September, E48A.

ACT : THE PROCESS

Suitable bamboos are chosen...

Tools that are used... hammer,saw,glove,machete

First of all, we cut down the bamboos. Then, we cut the bamboos into pieces due to the size, 2 meter

We had find difficulties cutting the hard bamboos at that time...We need more than one people to cut them

After finish cutting all the bamboos, we choose the suitable bamboos for floor and roof which the heavier bamboos as floor and post while the lighter as the upper frame to ensure that the or 'dome' do not collapse because of the over load on the top.

We started to stand the body of the dome first and followed by the roof.
by jointed up the bamboos by tight it using the ropes.

At last, We covered the dome by plastics.

It is important to us to cover the roof with plastics first before joint it up to the body of the dome because we will face a problem to cover the roof if the roof already on the top as the roof is quite high to us.
